History of Trelawn Plantation

The Bird Family moves to Florida

The Bird Family originally immigrated from England to the United States, settling in Virginia and then to South Carolina.  In 1827, Daniel Butler Bird Married Behehtland Brooks Simkins (His 3rd wife, He was widowed Twice Previously and  Behehtland was widowed once previously).  The couple moved to Florida in 1832.  Settling in Waukeenah, and then moving to Bunker Hill Plantation, just north of Monticello.  Daniel later purchased Nacoosa Plantation, just south of Monticello and lived there   (Verify & Source).

Together, Daniel and Behehtland had 4 Children. William Capers, Daniel Jr, Pickens Butler, Sarah Oliver and _________? ____.  The also had several children from their previous marriages

Daniel's youngest? son, Pickens,  was born in Jefferson County in 1833.   Pickens married Caroline Linton in 1853. Pickens and Caroline purchased the Trelawn property from John Goldwire Mathers in 1859.  The property consisted of 640? acres and a premises (per the deed)  the Plantation shared a common border with his fathers Plantation, Nacoosa (which is now the location of Simpsons Nursery)

Based on building styles, materials used, archaeological evidence and also deeds and census records, we believe the current home that sits on Trelawn was originally built by the Mathers Family in the 1830's.    After Purchasing the property and home, the Bird Family, named the property Trelawn.   Pickens only lived on the property for 2 short years, before leaving for the Civil War.  Pickens had 4?? Children Ella, Preston Brooks, Pickens Butler, Daniel B.

The property is believed to have grown cotton, Leconte Pears, and Watermelons over the years.

Preston lived at Trelawn, possibly constructing additions to the orginal home in the late 1880's.  The home stayed in the Bird Family until the early 1990's.
